Your scholarship in the USA

Wrestling, as the ultimate Olympic sport, is a very popular sport in the USA. The funding cannot be compared to any other system in the world. For this reason you can find a lot of international athletes at the various colleges in the USA. The incomparable popularity can be seen again and again at the national championships of the NCAA D1. There is nationwide TV coverage of the competitions that take place in arenas with over 20,000 spectators.

This recognition of the sport in connection with the combination of high-performance athletics and an academic career makes a wreslting scholarship an option that cannot be matched by any other country.

How many scholarships are there?

Wrestling at American universities is currently only supported on the men’s side. There are many options here to get a scholarship. Unfortunately, this is not yet the case with women. However, there is also the option of getting a sports scholarship. This is a decision that each university makes individually.

Universities with men’s wrestling teams:

  • NCAA D1: 78
  • NCAA D2: 33
  • NAIA: 61
  • NJCAA: 62

Full scholarships per team:

How is the training in the USA structured?

The college teams usually train between five and seven competition-like workouts per week, each lasting two hours in modern training facilities that are located directly on campus. In addition, there are between two and four strength and conditioning workouts.
You can be sure that you will train on site with the best coaches in the world. Because the colleges have the financial means to employ above-average trainers, some even from Russia. A wrestling scholarship offers you the opportunity to get on a top international level in order to make the jump to world championships and the Olympic Games..
While wrestlers in Europe act as individual athletes, there is an unbelievably huge team spirit in the United States.

What does a season at college look like?

Depending on the team’s schedule, the season begins either at the end of October or at the beginning of November and ends with the national championships at the end of March. There is a short break between Christmas and New Year.
The level at the competitions is considered to be very high, as many junior world champions compete for US colleges.
