On the men’s side you need to play consistently under 76 and have a handicap of 2 or better. While the women need a handicap of about 4.
But don’t worry if your handicap isn’t low enough. There is still a good chance to get financial support. Therefore contact our Scholarbook golf expert, Frederik Schulte and he will individually do your Opportunity Assessment.
“With experience of playing college golf for 3.5 years, a former national team player and teammate of Martin Kaymer, I can assess your chances very well and I will find the best college possible for you. The process is very individualized and is based primarily on our effective cooperation, because only when I know as much as possible about you, I can do my job well and find a fitting college for you.”

5 STEPS TO A golf SCHOLARSHIP
OVERCOMING ALL ACDEMIC HURDLES
There are three possibilities with which you can easily qualify for a study in the USA: 1. You complete successfully a good entrance qualification such as the vocational diploma, the Abitur (German equivalent of the “A Levels”) or the Matura (Austrian and Swiss Qualification). 2. You have your intermediate secondary school certificate and complete the so-called GED test. 3. You have completed a vocational training. Of course you have to meet only one of the three criteria.
Ideally, you would contact us about 1 to 1.5 years before you begin your studies in the US. Simply fill out our Assessment of Opportunities. You are a spontaneous person and the idea to study in the US just came to your mind at the last minute? No problem, in exceptional circumstances we can mediate your universtity place even up to 3 months prior to commencing studies. Once we receive your Assessment of Opportunity, we will contact you within 24 hours with our response.
To complete your candidate profile we need video footage showing you during training and during competition. We also collect all information about your athletic and academic background. Your video and the added information will complete your athlete profile to then receive offers from the coaches.
Once we have introduced you to the coaches, you will receive your scholarship offers. Your supervisor will advise you on your offers with regard to the athletic and academic interest of the university and together you choose your absolute favourite.

When should I apply?
It is best to start college right after graduating from high school if you want to play college golf. The college coaches choose young athletes so they can improve while they are playing on the team.
However, you can also go for only one year to the US. Or even do a Master’s degree with the help of a golf scholarship.
Ideally, you should contact us in all cases 12 to 24 months before you want to start studying.
How is the training structured in America?
The golf team practices about five times, for up to four hours per week at the university golf course. For example, have a look at the golf course Stanford here. The university doesn’t own the golf course, so it is not their private golf course, but they have different areas available reserved for practice. Sometimes though if you are lucky the golf team will have a private practice facility on campus.
In addition to hitting balls, working on short game and playing, there can be workouts three times a week focusing on strength and coordination. Usually golf might be seen as an individual sport but in America, team spirit is significant.
Most players can greatly improve under these professional conditions and with the incredible team spirit. You could lay the foundation for a career as a professional golfer.
Katharina Helms, who went to America in 2013 on a golf scholarship at the Newman University also benefitted from the ideal training conditions:
““The program is outstanding for female athletes and our coach is really good. We practice almost every day and get all the support we need. We get along very well and the atmosphere when we travel to tournaments is really great. I cannot wait for the spring season! The best thing is certainly that we can practice and play outdoors all year, while at home there might be snow on the ground. The American school system is completely different from the system in Europe, and I can only say that I like it better because your sport is combined with studies here. At home you have to do sports in your private time and I wouldn’t want to be without my college team!”
Katharina Helms, Newman University
What does the season look like?
Only in America you can combine golf, a very time-consuming sport, and your studies in such a great way. This attracts a lot of the top international golfers from Scotland, England, Sweden, South Africa, South Korea and all over the world, which brings the college tournaments to an extremely high level.
The season begins in January and ends with the NCAA National Championships in May. Making it possible for you to go back to your home country in the summer and play in some tournaments. There are tournaments during the fall and spring semester. During the fall you play mainly preparation tournaments and in the spring the conference tournament and National Championships take place.
Without Scholarbook I would probably had a hard time getting a scholarship for a Master’s degree in the United States. It was a successful, organized and very pleasant cooperation!
